You can migrate a license from a permanent serial number to a dongle — either one you already own or one you plan to order. Before we can do this, the serial number must be deactivated.
Important Notes
- A dongle can store up to 20 licenses and can be remotely upgraded.
- This is a permanent change: once migrated, a license cannot be transferred back to a serial number.
Which Scenario Applies to You?
✅ I Already Have a Dongle
If you already own a dongle and want to migrate a license to it, please note:
- Fees may apply if the migration is not part of a new order (e.g., upgrade or additional license).
- If in doubt, contact us beforehand to confirm any fees.
❌ I Don’t Have a Dongle Yet
If you don’t have a dongle:
- Order the dongle option specifying which Serial Number needs to be updated. You can order it from your regular reseller (preferred) or from the online store.
- Once payment is received, we’ll send you an empty dongle (no licenses yet).
- Follow the migration instructions below when you’re ready.
How to Get Started?
If you’re placing a new order (upgrade or product), simply add a note in the checkout comments, and if you are not placing a new order, email us. In both cases, indicate:
- The serial number you want to migrate
- The dongle number you want to use
Migration instructions
With Softron License Manager activations
- "Release" the serial number. If you don't have access to the computer anymore, do a Force Release.
- "Remove" the serial number from your account.
- Send us an email confirming that the Serial Number has been removed from your account.
- We permanently "kill" this Serial Number.
- We'll then migrate the license to your dongle in our database.
- You will then be able to upgrade your dongle.
With the old activation system
- Deactivate the "old" serial number. And make sure to enable the option to "Clear Serial Numbers". If you did not, reopen the application and in the license window click on "Clear Serial Numbers". Read more about clearing serials here.
- Send us an email confirming that the Serial Number has been deactivated.
- We permanently "kill" this Serial Number.
- We move the license(s) to the dongle(s); and we let you know when done
- You will then be able to upgrade your dongle.
⚠️ Timing and Temporary Licenses
The migration is a manual process. It is usually pretty quick, but it may take some time to complete.
To avoid downtime:
- Let us know in advance when you’ll deactivate the serial number.
- Or if needed, we can provide a temporary serial number for use during the migration process.
