Prerequisites
Growing file support for DaVinci Resolve has been added in MovieRecorder 4.6b75.
Make sure you are using a version after 4.6b75 to take advantage of this functionality.
Earlier versions of MovieRecorder offered limited growing file support with DaVinci Resolve. We strongly recommend updating to the latest version for optimal results.
Setting up MovieRecorder ️
When creating a new destination in MovieRecorder:
1. Select a QuickTime destination
2. Once the QuickTime destination is created:
- Under the Edit-while-ingest section, set the mode to Segmented.
- Enable the DaVinci Resolve Growing File option:
This setup ensures your files are optimized for live growing support in DaVinci Resolve.
2. Using DaVinci Resolve
In DaVinci Resolve, no specific setup is usually required.
When you import growing files, Resolve will recognize them automatically. You’ll notice a small red dot at the top-right corner of the thumbnail (visible in the Cut and Edit pages, but not in the Media page).
You can:
- View the clip growing live in the viewers.
- Add the clip to a timeline and extend it as more content is recorded.
Optional Setting
Under Settings > Decode Options, you can enable “Automatically refresh growing files in the media pool”.
However, as of today, Resolve appears to update growing files automatically even if this setting is not enabled. This behavior could change in future updates, so we recommend checking this option if you notice any issues.
3. Known issues and limitations
Audio Availability:
If you add a clip to your DaVinci Resolve project within the first six seconds after the recording has started, there may be audio issues. In some cases, the audio track could be missing.
We are actively working on improving this behavior in future updates.
File Naming and Caching Issues:
When performing multiple recordings in the same folder using identical file names, DaVinci Resolve may show unexpected behavior. Because Resolve caches media files, it might continue to reference an earlier version of the file instead of the most recent one.
To avoid this, we strongly recommend using unique file names for each recording. You can easily achieve this by using the “Custom” file naming feature available in the Destinations settings of MovieRecorder.
